Body Attunement

The word “Attunement” in Psychology

When we attune with others we allow our own internal state to shift, to come to resonate with the inner world of another. This resonance is at the heart of the important sense of “feeling felt” that emerges in close relationships. Children need attunement to feel secure and to develop well, and throughout our lives we need attunement to feel close and connected.
— Dr. Dan Siegel

Do you have a strong connection with your body? Often, feeling disconnected from our bodies can be linked to emotional distress, as well as physical trauma or difficult relationships.

Body Attunement is good for you: If…

  • You have suffered from trauma: BA cultivate sensory awareness for trauma recovery by feeling safe and taking control of your body.

  • You have a busy life: BA invites you to look inward within yourself and take care of your emotional and physical needs.

When we cannot rely on our body to signal safety or warning and instead feel chronically overwhelmed by physical stirrings, we lost the capacity to feel at home in our own skin and, by extension, in the world.

Method

During this session, we will incorporate a variety of tools such as gentle touch, pressure points, Thai yoga, Tai Chi, posture corrections, healing sounds, breath coaching, and energetic work. The purpose of Body Attunement is to help you become more mindful of your body and cultivate a nurturing, loving, and sensual relationship with yourself. The session is fully clothed, and we can either sit on a chair or lie down on a yoga mat. Additionally, we will practice meditation together.

Background to Grace’s Body Attunement’s approach

After experiencing trauma, I sought counseling but found its limitations. Instead, I found healing through my spirituality, including Zen meditation, Tai chi, mindfulness, art, dance, and theater. The love of God has also been a powerful healing force for me. As a massage therapist, holistic coach, and psychotherapist, I know that the body, mind, and emotions are deeply connected.

During my time as a massage therapist, I found that many of my clients sought my services not only to alleviate muscle soreness or pain, but also to reconnect with their bodies. Sometimes, as they became more comfortable and attuned to their bodies, deep emotions would surface. I believe that integrating talk therapy, emotional awareness, and body sense reorientation is a profound and holistic approach to body attunement. This is the foundation of my work.

In 2008, The Seattle Times interviewed me regarding Thai Yoga Massage.
